Achieving a flat and even surface is one of the most important goals in professional tile installation. Even small height differences between adjacent tiles can affect both the appearance and usability of the finished surface. These uneven transitions, often referred to as lippage, are especially noticeable when working with large-format ceramic or porcelain tiles. Proper preparation, correct adhesive application, and the use of a suitable tile leveling system can significantly reduce this problem.
Prepare the Surface Properly
The quality of the final installation depends heavily on the condition of the surface underneath the tiles. Before installation begins, the floor or wall should be clean, stable, and as level as possible.
Any cracks, bumps, dust, or loose materials should be removed before applying adhesive. If the surface has major irregularities, these should be corrected in advance. A properly prepared base makes it much easier to keep neighboring tiles at the same height.
Use a Tile Leveling System
A tile leveling system is one of the most effective solutions for reducing lippage during installation. Clips, wedges, or screw-type leveling components are positioned between adjacent tiles to help keep their upper surfaces aligned.
The system applies controlled pressure while the adhesive is setting. This prevents individual tiles from moving upward or downward and makes it easier to maintain consistent alignment throughout the installation.
Check Alignment During Installation
Tiles should be checked continuously rather than waiting until the entire area has been completed. A spirit level or straightedge can be used to identify height differences while the adhesive is still workable.
Making small adjustments during installation is much easier than correcting an uneven surface after the adhesive has cured. Installers should also periodically step back and visually inspect the overall alignment.
